Kay Hutchison

Bright colors and brilliant light sources infuse the work of Kay Hutchison. Kay’s paintings combine quirky distortions and a unique play between saturated and muted colors in order to bring new life to mundane objects and scenes.  Kay describes her work as a blend between the work of the artists Thomas Hart Benton and Edward Hopper.  Her paintings have the sculptural qualities and odd distortions of Thomas Hart Benton.  Yet, her subject matters are linked to Edward Hopper. Like Hopper, Kay gravitates to scenes of sterile, virtually empty cityscapes.
Kay Hutchison was born and raised in Raleigh, NC.  Kay received a BFA in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI.  Other than her canvas paintings, Kay’s energies are spread between painting murals and commercial illustrations.  Kay’s largest project to date is a twenty feet long mural for the United States Military Academy at West Point. Other important projects include murals for Duke Hospital’s Raleigh location and the five-star Umstead Hotel in Cary, NC.
