Kristin Gibson
Kristin Gibson lives in Carolina Beach, near Wilmington, NC with her
family, and paints full time from her home and backyard in a space
called "Saltwater Studio". The name gives a nod to her process and to
a lifetime lived by the sea. Kristin paints only originals entirely
from life in one “alla prima” sitting. This “all at once”
approach keeps her evolving and authentic. Kristin is currently
represented by several galleries across the state including City Art
Gallery in Greenville, NC; Tyler White Gallery in Greensboro, NC;
Three Hounds Gallery in Wilmington, NC; Artshak in Southport, NC; and
Woods Gallery on Bald Head Island. In the West, Kristin is newly
represented by Jandreau Art in Taos, New Mexico.
Since as early as I can remember I've explored the process of
creating art. Even as I work today, I recall sitting on a stool in
"Miss Pelly's" studio, doing perspective drawings or a linoleum cut
of a box turtle. The unexpected, the opportunity for learning and the
chance to get messy that began as a child are still the reasons I
paint everyday. While attending East Carolina University School of
Art, I studied both traditional painting and surface textile design.
I furthered my studies at Penland, Arrowmont, and The Fabric Workshop
in Philadelphia, going on to work as a fabric designer who loved to
paint. Experiences in the textile industry shaped my sense of color
and composition. Composition that evolves into expressionistic
seascapes of shape, color, texture — further evolving into
contemplative still life as reflection and recollection.
With a penchant for mixing color and combining pattern, inspiration
begins with organic shapes & colors of fruits, flowers, vegetables,
shells — a jumping off point — infused with elements of a textile,
a grandmother's teapot or a first pair of eyeglasses. I am interested
most in a spontaneous, intuitive story of line, shape, color. A quiet
inner space that exists for the duration I paint. This becoming the
place I am finding my authentic voice and most sophisticated work.
This the place I seek to express in color and form.
